Unlike Creative upscaling, which can reconstruct, reinterpret, and synthesize new details, Precision is designed to enhance only what is already present in the footage. Every element of the original is preserved as faithfully as possible: composition, shapes, textures, motion, color, and the visual identity of all objects and scenes.
The result is a higher-resolution version of your video that looks and feels exactly like the original, just sharper and more detailed. Precision delivers Magnific's signature quality and was the most requested capability from users after the launch of the Creative Video Upscaler.

Choosing the right mode
The Video Upscaler offers two modes: Precision and Creative. Choosing between them depends on two factors: the quality of your input video and what you want the output to achieve. This table helps you decide quickly.

For example, imagine a real footage beach scene where the ocean waves contain rich natural textures and complex motion. Precision will preserve those intricate details and enhance them naturally as the resolution increases. A Creative model might sometimes reinterpret or smooth those micro details, potentially making them appear slightly more synthetic. Precision retains and enhances the authentic texture of the water, the grain of the sand, and the subtle gradients in the sky.
Precision is also a perfect choice for professional studios working with footage that already meets high production standards. Precision allows studios to increase resolution and extract the maximum possible level of detail while ensuring that nothing in the original production is altered.
How to upscale a video with Precision
Open the Video Upscaler
Go to freepik.com/pikaso/video-upscaler or open the Video Upscaler from the AI Suite menu. The tool is also available on Magnific.ai under Video Upscaler.
Upload your video
Upload a video file from your device or select one from your recent creations.
Select Precision mode
Choose Precision as your upscaling mode. This ensures the upscaler will faithfully enhance your footage without creative reinterpretation.
Adjust post-processing controls
Fine-tune the output using FPS Boost, Sharpen, and Smart Grain controls. These are optional and the defaults work well for most footage.
Upscale
Click Upscale and wait for processing. Generation time varies depending on the duration and resolution of your input.
Preview and download
Review the upscaled result. If satisfied, download the high-resolution output to your device.
Post-processing controls
Precision includes four post-processing controls to fine-tune your upscaled output. These are applied after the upscaling process and let you adjust the final look without changing the core upscaling behavior.
Strength
Controls how strongly the video is enhanced. Lower values stay closer to the original with minimal changes, while higher values apply more aggressive upscaling and detail enhancement.
If you want maximum enhancement, try 80-100% and compare with the default to choose the version you prefer. If you notice oversharpening, try reducing Strength for a subtler result.
Strength is locked to 100% when FPS Boost is enabled. To adjust Strength manually, disable FPS Boost. We are working on implementing FPS Boost as an independent post-processing step in future updates, enabling results with Strength below 100% combined with FPS Boost.
FPS Boost
Doubles the frame rate of your video for smoother, more fluid playback. This is especially useful for footage that was originally recorded or generated at a low frame rate. For example, 24fps content can be boosted to 48fps, or 30fps content to 60fps. The result is noticeably smoother motion, particularly in scenes with fast movement or camera pans.
Sharpen
Enhances edge clarity and definition across the entire video. Use this to bring out fine details in textures, text overlays, and object boundaries after upscaling. Sharpening works best when applied subtly. A small amount can reveal detail that upscaling uncovered, while too much can introduce harsh edges or visible halos around high-contrast areas.
Smart Grain
Adds or preserves natural photographic grain in the output. This control helps maintain the organic, film-like texture of real footage and prevents the overly smooth or digital look that can sometimes result from upscaling. Smart Grain is particularly valuable for cinematic content, analog-style footage, or any video where you want to retain the texture and character of the original recording medium.
Precision limitations
Understanding what Precision does not do is just as important as understanding what it does. Precision is designed to faithfully upscale the original content, which means it will also faithfully upscale any problems that exist in the source.
Precision does not correct defects that already exist in the input video.
If the source video contains any of the following issues, Precision will preserve them in the upscaled output:
- AI generation artifacts: glitches, inconsistencies, or unnatural elements from the AI model
- Flickering or unstable textures: areas that shift or shimmer between frames
- Distorted faces or objects: warped geometry or misshapen features
- Visual glitches or inconsistencies: random anomalies in the footage
- Warped geometry or strange shapes: structural distortions in the scene
This is by design. Precision's purpose is to enhance what is already there, not to reinterpret or repair. If your video has these kinds of issues, the Creative upscaler is the better choice because it has the flexibility to reconstruct and correct problematic areas.

Creative upscaler: when and why
While this article focuses on Precision, understanding the Creative upscaler is essential for choosing the right tool for each project. Creative provides greater flexibility when improving video quality. It can reconstruct, reinterpret, and synthesize details to produce a sharper and richer result, even when the original video lacks sufficient information.
Because Creative models are not strictly constrained by the original structure, they can generate new low and high-frequency details that may not be clearly present in the source video. This capability makes Creative especially useful in several situations.
When Creative works best
- Input contains artifacts or defects. Warped faces, distorted objects, flickering, glitches, or unstable details.
- Input has low or very low resolution. Small, blurry, or pixelated footage.
- Input lacks sufficient detail. Needs strong reconstruction beyond what exists in the source.
- Maximum perceived sharpness is the goal. You want the strongest possible enhancement and texture synthesis.
Repairing defects with Creative
One of the most important advantages of Creative upscaling is its ability to improve videos that contain visible defects. This is where the fundamental difference between the two modes becomes most apparent.
If an AI-generated video contains warped or inconsistent faces, distorted objects, soft flickering, or glitches, Precision will upscale those problems exactly as they appear in the input. It has no choice: faithfully reproducing the source is what Precision does.
Creative models, on the other hand, have the flexibility to reinterpret those problematic areas and generate a more coherent result. They can often correct or significantly reduce visual issues by reconstructing what the scene should look like based on context, rather than simply reproducing what is there.
Handling low-resolution inputs
Another major advantage of Creative upscaling appears when working with low-resolution or blurry inputs. This is one of the clearest cases where the choice between Precision and Creative matters most.
If a video is extremely small and lacks clear details, Precision may struggle to produce a very sharp or detailed 4K result because it relies entirely on the information already present in the source. There is a limit to how much you can enhance footage when the original data simply is not there.
Creative models can go further in these cases. By reconstructing textures and details (essentially filling in what the source is missing) they can produce surprisingly sharp and detailed high-resolution outputs, even when the original video is blurry or heavily degraded.
For very low-resolution inputs, Creative is almost always the best choice.


Creative flavors: Natural vs Vivid
Within the Creative upscaler, two styles are available: Natural and Vivid. Both modes can generate a high level of detail and texture, but they differ in how those details are interpreted and rendered. The difference lies mainly in the character of the details, not the amount.
Creative Natural (Realistic preset)
Creative Natural focuses on producing detail in a more organic and realistic way. It generates textures that feel natural and believable, making it especially well suited for subjects that benefit from subtle and realistic rendering.
Natural is particularly effective for:
- Human skin and faces. Subtle pores, natural tone variations, realistic texture.
- Hair. Individual strands, natural flow and highlights.
- Animals and fur. Organic fiber detail, natural color gradients.
- Plants and vegetation. Leaves, bark, grass with authentic detail.
- Organic surfaces. Rocks, soil, water, wood, and natural environments.
Because of its more organic approach, Natural often produces results that feel more faithful to real-world textures. When in doubt between Natural and Vivid, Natural is the safer default for most realistic content.
Creative Vivid (Animation and 3D preset)
Creative Vivid applies a different stylistic interpretation, often emphasizing clarity, contrast, and visual impact. While it does not necessarily produce more detail than Natural, it may render details with a stronger or more stylized appearance depending on the scene.
Vivid works well for:
- Stylized visuals. Cartoon, anime, or graphic-style content.
- Digital or AI-generated scenes. Content that benefits from pronounced clarity.
- 3D renders and animations. Clean surfaces, sharp edges, defined geometry.
- Graphics and motion design. Environments where a more pronounced look is desired.

Tips and best practices
Getting the best results with Precision
- Start with the best source material you can. Precision works by enhancing what is already in your video. The higher the quality of your input, the better the result. If possible, use the highest-resolution source file available.
- Use Precision for real footage. The model excels at preserving authentic textures, natural motion, and organic details that Creative models might reinterpret or smooth.
- Do not use Precision to fix problems. If your video has artifacts, flickering, distortions, or visual glitches, switch to Creative. Precision will faithfully upscale those defects along with everything else, often making them more visible at higher resolution.
- Enable FPS Boost for smoother playback. If your source video feels choppy or was generated at a low frame rate, FPS Boost doubles the frame rate. This is one of the most impactful single improvements you can make.
- Apply Sharpen sparingly. A small amount of sharpening can bring out detail that upscaling revealed, but too much introduces harsh edges. Start with the default and increase gradually.
- Use Smart Grain to keep real footage looking natural. For cinematic or photographic content, a touch of grain helps the upscaled result feel authentic rather than overly processed or digital.
Choosing between modes
- Try Creative first for AI-generated content. Unless your AI video is already polished and free of visual issues, Creative (especially Natural) will often produce a better result by correcting common AI generation artifacts.
- Default to Natural within Creative. When choosing between Natural and Vivid, Natural is the safer default for most content. Use Vivid only when working with intentionally stylized, digital, or graphic-heavy material.
- For mixed-quality footage, consider upscaling clips separately. If your project contains both high-quality real footage and AI-generated clips with artifacts, upscale them separately using the appropriate mode for each, then combine in the Video Project Editor.
