Create an Image for Instagram Stories with Freepik

Thanks to the nice weather, a higher number of daylight hours, the holidays and the summer bonus, June 20 is considered to be the happiest day of the year, and in Spain it’s called Yellow Day.

Here at Freepik, we have many reasons to smile. Celebrate with us this day with our resources expressly designed for this, along with this tutorial, where you’ll learn how to create your own Instagram story focused on this amusing event.

Choosing the resources and setting up the artboard

In this tutorial, we’ll design an Instagram Story using two Freepik vector resources, adapting them to our needs.

These are the two resources:

https://fp.stock-pik-api.com/free-vector/lettering-quote-with-image_4003177.htm

https://fp.stock-pik-api.com/free-vector/twitter-post-with-lemons_798461.htm

First, create a new document in Illustrator with a size of 750×1334 pixels, which is the optimal for Instagram Stories. The color mode must be set to RGB.

Now, open both resources, select the elements that you think you’ll need, copy them and paste them into your document. In my case, I selected the text from the first resource, and the background with lemons from the other one.

Working on the design

Create a rectangle for the background. Make sure it covers the entire artboard and apply a dark yellow tone to it (#f1c656).

If this rectangle is on top of the design, just send it to the back by right-clicking on it → Arrange → Send To Back.

Adjust the text as you see fit. Make sure you leave some room at the margins of the artboard to avoid any kind of space issues with the design.

Tip: When scaling objects, remember to hold the Shift key to scale proportionally. If you also hold the Alt key, the scaling will be done from the center of the object.

Let’s change the color of the lines of the lemon to a lighter yellow tone (#fdf0aa). This will give our design a monochromatic color scheme. This means the harmony of our elements will appear as a contrast with a minimalist look.

Clone the lemon several times until you fill up the design. Rotate the copies and give them different sizes. To clone an object, click on it and drag it while holding the Alt key. When you have it in the desired spot, release the mouse button and then the Alt key.

Even though you should fill up the design with lemons, try not to overdo it. The result should look like this:

Now, let’s clip our design. First, select the background layer and press Ctrl/Cmd + C to copy it. Then, press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + V to paste it in place.

Select everything on the artboard, right-click → Make Clipping Mask.

Take a look at the design. It seems that the contrast with the text is too much, compared to the rest of the elements. To fix this, let’s use a color with a 90% of black. Its color code is #3c3c3b.

You can make any necessary changes, such as removing the leaves from the lettering or adding different visual elements, even your own logo. With this, the design is pretty much finished, so you can post it on Instagram to celebrate the happiest day of the year. Thank you for following this tutorial.
